Cake

A dear friend of mine, Cole, makes cakes.  She lives up the street from me and occasionally I am able to partake in the deliciousness that comes from her kitchen.  Recently, she was "unlucky" enough to find herself in the hospital for 8 days and will be out of commission for 10 weeks (or more!) after.  Although she's on the mend now, it was pretty serious for a while.  Before her unplanned trip to the hospital, Cole had planned to make a retirement cake for another neighbor.  The neighbor asked me if I could make it when poor Cole suddenly found herself in the hospital.  Here's how it went:
The cakes all ready to be put together.  I spent one day making the cakes, froze them over night (for easier assembly), and spent the majority of the next day making filling, frosting, and decorating.
Getting the filling started.  Raspberries and sugar.  I then put the raspberries through a wire mesh strainer to get out as many seeds as I could.
I measured the cakes (I had trimmed them down a bit) and then made my board.  I'm still not sure why the board came out as big as it did, but there was no turning back!
Iced with a very light vanilla cream.
Originally, I was going to do a Coast Guard stripe for the background, but my piping gel was too runny and in the end I had to scrape it off and start over.
I made the helicopters out of white chocolate that I colored using some of my cake gel colors.  I love those things.
The end result.  I think they were pretty happy with it.  I admire that Cole does this regularly.  I was a nervous mess.  I might be able to do an okay job, but I don't think I could bake cakes for others all the time!
