Halloween? Already?
Here are my little monsters all dressed up for their first trick-or-treat adventure last Saturday. Most of the local towns have a business trick-or-treat/costume parade and we LOVE the one we went to. It can get a little crowded, but it is still fun (and sometimes creepy...giant Winnie the Pooh with scary make-up) to see all the costumes. I'm a big fan of homemade. I make my kids' costumes every year. This year I did a somewhat-homemade. Star is a witch, but I didn't make the hat, tights, and I only painted her shirt. The skirt, although a little long, turned out great and I'm very happy with it. I searched a thrift store for white pants and shirt for Miss Fabulous...found a tan color instead...much better. Tore strips of fabric and got a large piece of gauze from the fabric store and dyed them with tea (Orange and Winter Spice...the house smelled so good!!!). It is a pain to wrap her up (I've done it 4 times now) but it won't last forever and I'll re-think her costume next year, whatever it may be, before I agree to anything. Dash is a pirate. I DID make most of his, although I didn't finish it off as nicely as the pattern called. See, I think a pirate should have raggedy clothes. I also painted an almost-too-small white shirt with curlys for a hairy chest. I doubt many people have gotten it, but I thought it was pretty cute. If only he'd leave his bandana on! As for myself, just ask Star what I'm going as...she'll tell you I'm a "stick in the mud!" She asked me about it a while ago and she has remembered my answer an proudly told everyone that asks. When I got them ready the first time, she asked where my costume was and I told her I was already wearing it. Now when I wear that shirt, she calls it my Stick in the Mud Costume. Makes me chuckle every time.
So the hurricane came through on Monday and the weather has been VERY nice (aside from the actual hurricane) for this time of year. I'm hoping it stays nice for tonight. We've had some COLD Halloweens here and I'm looking forward to not freezing or getting soaked while I take the kids around. The kids don't seem to care. I guess the getting candy thing warms them up and keeps them dry. Ohhhh...maybe I'll make some split pea soup for tonight!
